Abstract

According to the National Aging Resource Center on Elder Abuse, women represent 62% of the cases of elder abuse, often at the hands of their spouses. ~ A large portion of this figure represents abuse of the dependent elderly. But longstanding abuse or abuse that has developed in later-life relationships, even those formed after the child-bearing years, also may occur. Any woman, regardless of age, socioeconomic status, or cultural background, who is in an intimate relationship (legal or otherwise) with a man should be screened for domestic violence. 2 Elderly men are subject to abuse as they assume a dependent position that requires caregiving. Home care nurses must recognize the signs of domestic violence and elder abuse and know how to safely intervene in both situations.
