Abstract
Several pieces of “animal” legislation which may be of interest to A.S.A.S. members have been introduced and are now awaiting further action by the 94th Congress. Representative G. William Whitehurst of Virginia is responsible for the greatest number of animal welfare bills introduced during the present session (as of March 16). Three of these bills (H.R. 1152, 4027, and 4028) would amend the Animal Welfare Act of 1970 by broadening the categories of persons regulated under the law, adding birds in pet stores and zoos to the kinds of animals protected under that law, and increase protection for animals in transit. Those bills have gone to the House Committee on Agriculture. Whitehurst has also introduced two bills (H.R. 1154 and 4030) to provide assistance to zoos and aquariums and establish a Federal Zoological and Aquarium Board.
