Abstract

A poster for W.H. Power's touring production of The Ivy Leaf , an American melodrama celebrating life in rural Ireland, suggests a reliable source for Edison's 1908 film Rescued from an Eagle's Nest . Challenging Charles Musser's claim that this film, produced by Edwin S. Porter, directed by J. Searle Dawley, and featuring D.W. Griffith in a leading role, was entirely derived from a waxwork group in New York's Eden Musee, Mayer offers pictorial and textual evidence that the film was taken from this theatrical source.
