Abstract

An investigation of the population and residence time in different ward areas in a typical hospital in China revealed that the causes that influence outdoor air requirements on hospital wards are the population size and the large variations in population. A ventilation system with a constant outdoor airflow rate cannot meet the actual outdoor air requirements on the ward. This study described two typical population conditions, that is, normal and abnormal, set up an abnormal population model based on an analysis of the composition of the population, and established regulation criteria for outdoor air requirements based on CO2 concentrations. Designers should consider doctor rounds and family visits to understand the outdoor air requirements on wards. It is recommended that ventilation systems in wards should have a variable airflow rate system that can run in accordance with the normal designed outdoor airflow rate under normal conditions and with a higher outdoor airflow rate under abnormal conditions.
