Abstract

Biodegradable water-soluble polymers are in their infancy, few examples of commercial value exist, although there is recognition of their need. At this time, there is a developing consensus on some of the requirements e.g. the polymers must biodegrade completely and preferably in their disposal environments such as a wastewater treatment facility. However, there are formidable synthesis hurdles to overcome, and only recently has it become apparent that the best approach is through modelling natural structures regardless of the origin of base-raw materials, synthetic or natural.
