Abstract

The secretory activity of the testis has been traditionally evaluated through measurements of its products either in peripheral blood or in spermatic vein blood (Hammond et al. 1977, Adamopoulos et al. 1979). In recent years, evaluations have been extended to include hormone concentrations in seminal fluid (Adamopoulos et al. 1976) or in testicular tissue (Nieschlag et al. 1979). However, no study has attempted up to now to investigate in a thorough way the relative distribution of hormonal products of the testis in the various functional compartments of the male reproductive tract where they exert their biological action. This report presents the results of a study in which simultaneous determinations of testosterone (T), oestradiol (O2), oestrone (O1) and sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) were determined in testicular tissue (TT), spermatic vein blood (SVB), peripheral blood (cubital blood–CB), seminal fluid (SF) and vas deferens wash fluid (WF).
