Abstract

According to projections by the Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) the region of Southeast Asia will be the next global hot spot of the AIDS epidemic. It is noted that rates of infection are escalating rapidly as the economies of the countries in this region crash and sexual exploitation feeds upon the desperation of impoverished young women their families and communities. In view of such The Asian Reproductive Health Graduate Education and Training Program was launched during the 1999 International Womens Day. Public health practitioners from Southeast Asia and the US gathered in Bangkok to launch this month-long intensive reproductive health course. Participants were from Cambodia Lao Peoples democratic Republic Burma the Philippines Thailand and Vietnam as well as North Carolina. Discussions focused on economic and political stability health infrastructure and health and social welfare of the countries.
