Abstract

This paper describes ecological features of the reproductive biology of a population of Elachistocleis bicolor. From a sample obtained monthly throughout a year it was quantified the mass of the fat bodies and the ovaries, fecundity, and testicular volume. There was evidence of a relationship between reproductive activity and temperature, although we cannot rule photoperiod as a regulator of the reproductive cycle. The dynamics of fat bodies did not accompany the reproductive cycle, since their mass does not vary significantly during the year. There was observed an evident sexual dimorphism, in females largest than males and colored vocal sacs, although this was present only in some males. Fecundity in females increases with body size, however larger females not invested the major proportions of resources in reproduction.
