Abstract

The phytoseiid mite Amblyseius hibisci (Chant) has been prevalent on avocado plants in southern California and is found on lemons in the Albany area of northern California. A. hibisci was observed feeding on pollen, honeydew, mildew (Chant and Fleschner 1960) and scale crawlers (McMurtry 1963), as well as phytophagous mites (Fleschner and Ricker 1954). It was also determined that A. hibisci reproduced more rapidly on pollen than on tetranychid mites (McMurtry and Scriven 1964) and that increase of this species on avocado in spring in the absence of mite prey was correlated with the presence of pollen produced by avocado flowers (McMurtry and Johnson 1965).
