Abstract

Objectives: This study was comprised of two separate experiments comparing clinical tests assessing the trunk extensor and flexor muscles, respectively. We aimed to determine the most tolerable and reproducible tests for assessing patients with chronic low back pain [CLBP] and to compare the performance of those CLBP patients to those of matched healthy normal control [HNC] volunteers.Method: Three groups of 20 [students, CLBP patients, and HNCs] were involved in each experiment. The student group [SG] was the first group to be assessed. For Experiment 1, SG performances of the trunk extensors were assessed by means of the Sorensen, Ito, and repetitive arch-up tests. The CLBP and HNC groups performed the Sorensen and repetitive arch-up tests. For Experiment 2, we subjected the SG to the static endurance tests of abdominals described by Hyytiainen [SET1] and by McQuade [SET2]. The CLBP and HNC groups did the SET2 test. Results: The Ito test was found uncomfortable for several students and did not seem appro...
