Abstract

This essay discusses representations of gender and sexuality in Contemporary Indian Dance to delineate this hybrid, multi-layered style involving movement, theatre, multimedia, as performed in India and in the Indian diaspora globally, in particular artistic work in the US and Canada. Contemporary Indian Dancers' progressive gender politics challenges stereotypes of sexual identities. Creative choreography includes scenarios of domestic violence and other situations where the body is on the line. The essay demonstrates how such creative productions reiterate these artists' belief that arts play a role in raising social awareness and inspiring change for a better future for women, men, and communities.
