Abstract

The article analyzes the context of institutional repositories in Italy and in Europe in relation to their dual function as tools to disseminate research outputs and as Current Research Information Systems (CRIS). The author reflects on the consequences of this dual role for the goals of Open Science and tries to answer the following two questions, i.e.: if and how much institutional repositories have effectively supported research dissemination in Italy. On the contrary, some European countries and higher education institutions have preferred to separately manage IR and CRIS. In this specific case, a close internal collaboration has been set up between academic library systems and research areas and offices. In conclusion the author discusses how repositories can fully realize their role of research dissemination by analysing the COAR Next generation repositories working group report and technical requirements, published in November 2017.
