Abstract

This column provides a brief overview of several recent publications which describe state and federal policies that address three classes of problems related to substance use Disorders and addictions treatment. The first three documents address controversies related to the diversion of methadone, and the next report examines racial disparities in rates of imprisonment for drug offenses. The final report summarizes recommendations of a national panel convened to help state governments be more effective in their approaches to the prevention and treatment of SUDs and related problems. Addictions nurses are encouraged to develop an understanding about how policy issues at the level of local, state and federal government affect the provision of addictions prevention and treatment services at the agency/service delivery level. Well-informed addictions nurses have numerous opportunities to influence addictions policies and to advocate for individuals affected by them.
