Abstract

Even though offshore wind power projects provide renewable energy and do not produce air pollutants, they can negatively impact the environment during construction and operation. Moreover, wind power projects can interfere with other uses of coastal resources. Newspapers could play an important role in facilitating informed public debate concerning specific proposals and offshore wind power generally. This article focuses on the newspaper coverage of a proposal for an offshore wind power development in Massachusetts. The author analyzed 110 newspaper articles, editorials, and op/ed pieces on the proposal that appeared in three newspapers. The analysis showed that the papers did a poor job covering most environmental, social, and regulatory issues. Among other things, the analysis also showed that the papers relied heavily on cultural models that deal with contests to frame their stories and failed to draw on the expertise of nearby research institutions.
