Abstract

If BNCT were performed in a single, unique facility and if its science were unique, concepts and terminology specific to this new modality could be developed. However, BNCT is a form of radiation therapy. To benefit from the vast accumulated experience with all types of radiation therapy and to ensure a common understanding and allow a fruitful exchange of information between different centers, clear, well defined, unambiguous, and universally accepted concepts and terminology are needed. The International Commission on Radiation Units (ICRU) has provided the framework for this communication exchange by defining concepts and terminology and publishing recommendations for reporting external beam therapy (ICRU Reports 29 and 50) and brachytherapy (ICRU Reports 38 and 58). The aim of this presentation is to discuss the application of the ICRU recommendations to the specific problems encountered in BNCT.
