Abstract

Two day deliberations (2–3 December 2010) on Indian Nursing in the New Era of Healthcare were organised in New Delhi by the Centre for Women’s Development Studies, New Delhi and was supported by the Indian Council of Social Sciences on the occasion of the International Year of the Nurse. This was a national seminar with a difference as the participants included social science researchers, faculty of nursing in various universities across India, nurse leaders, activists and clinical practitioners. Various issues like structures of healthcare in India, its globalisation, status of nursing, collective bargaining, gendered nature of nursing profession within the hospital hierarchy and nursing education were discussed. The seminar exhorted the participants to encourage research on nursing and further collaborations between the social sciences and nursing professionals.
