Abstract
This is the 54th annual report of the British Trust for Ornithology's Ringing Scheme. The high levels of ringing and recovery of recent years were maintained with 840,615 birds being ringed and 13,523 recoveries being reported. The annual statistics for the scheme are tabulated and details of 195 birds ringed in Britain and Ireland and of 86 birds ringed abroad are listed. The factors influencing the data gathered by the scheme are discussed. Although the breeding season was not as productive as in 1989, levels of ringing of most species remained similar in 1990. Irruptive movements of Waxwings and Crossbills were reflected in large increases in the numbers ringed. Slightly reduced numbers of birds recovered reflected the lack of significant cold weather in 1990. The activities of ringers from France and Britain in Senegal led to an overall increase in the number of trans‐Saharan recoveries of passerines.
