Abstract

The International Hydrographic Bureau (IHB) was founded in June 1921 and re- named the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) in 1967. The original name remains as the title of the headquarters of the Organization situated in Monte Carlo, Monaco. Membership of the Organization remained constant at 54 Member States Parties during 1986, and it is anticipated that soon Papua New Guinea, Oman, and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea will become members. Cameroon and Tan- zania are also considering membership. The main objectives of the IHO are to bring about: 1. coordination of the activities of national hydrographic offices; 2.
