Abstract

In 1992, Daiji Kashiwagi, MD, Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Kobe University in Japan, established the Japanese American Traveling Fellowship in association with the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. This Fellowship initially was funded by the Kashiwagi/Sumihara Foundation, and it subsequently was supported by the Kashiwagi/Suzuki Foundation. Every two years, four American Fellows have been selected to tour Japan. The Japanese American Traveling Fellowship is now supported by the Japanese Orthopaedic Association. The 2000 Japanese American Traveling Fellows were selected by four members of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons: John P. Dormans, MD; Stuart A. Green, MD; William L. Healy, MD; and William J. Kane, MD. Each selector individually rated the applicants on a standard scale, the ratings were combined, and the four highest-rated applicants were selected as Fellows. The 2000 Japanese American Traveling Fellows represented diverse specialties of orthopaedic surgery and different sections of the United States. They were selected to serve as intellectual and personal ambassadors of both the American Orthopaedic Association and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. The 2000 Fellows (with their locations and subspecialties) were: Earl W. Brien, MD, Los Angeles, California, musculoskeletal oncology; Craig S. Roberts, MD, Louisville, Kentucky, sports medicine; Steven M. Topper, MD, Portland, Oregon, hand surgery; and Alexander R. Vaccaro, MD, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, spine. In the year 2000, the administration of the Fellowship was transferred from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons to the American Orthopaedic Association. The current members of the AOA-JOA Traveling Fellowship Committee include: William L. Healy, MD (Chairman); Michael J. Botte, MD; Moheb S. Moneim, MD; Robert M. Szabo, MD; and Alexander R. Vaccaro, MD.
