Abstract

Localized juvenile spongiotic gingival hyperplasia (LJSGH) is a distinct subtype of gingival inflammatory hyperplasia with a strong predilection for young patients. Clinically, it is generally characterized as a solitary lesion, with a micropapillary or granular surface and a bright red overgrowth on the attached gingiva. The diagnosis as well as the treatment may be challenging. We report 4 cases of LJSGH (2 men and 2 women; ages 9-17 years) involving the anterior maxillary gingiva, with distinct clinical features. Surgical excision or therapy with topical steroids was used to treat the lesions, and the patients were followed up for 1 to 9 years. Current cases involve long-term follow-up, in contrast to the previous cases published in the literature, and thus provide an insight into the natural history of the lesion and response to treatment.
