Abstract
The Committee on Land‐Erosion, consisting of William H. Hobbs (resigned), C. W. Thornthwaite and myself, has not had time to do much thus far. The Chairman only recently returned from China when he was informed of the appointment of this Committee. But plans are under way to begin a comprehensive examination of the complex dynamics of land‐erosion. We are pleased to report that in 1941 your Chairman arranged for the Symposium on Dynamics of Land‐Erosion for the General Meeting of the Annual Assembly of the American Geophysical Union [see Trans. Amer. Geophys, Union, Part II, pp. 236–320, 1941]. In this symposium, the following papers have laid important groundwork for further development of this subject: (1) Geomorphic aspects of normal and accelerated erosion, by C. F. STEWART SHARPE; (2) Land‐erosion—normal and accelerated— in the semiarid west, by REED W. BAILEY; (3) Recent developments in the dynamics of wind‐erosion, by FRANK J. MALINA; (4) Dynamics of water‐erosion on land‐surfaces, by LEONARD SCHIFF and ROBERT E. YODER; (5) Dynamics of entrainment of erosional debris and sedimentation by CARL B. BROWN; (6) Physiographic engineering: Land‐erosion controls, by W. C. LOWDERMILK.
