Abstract

Abstract Airborne concentrations of six organic solvents were measured using personal sampling techniques for employees working in the liquid inks and paste inks departments of a small printing ink manufacturing facility in South Africa. Airborne solvent concentrations exceeded the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists' Threshold Limit Value-Time-Weighted Average (ACGIH TLV-TWAs) in the liquid inks department, but were well below the ACGIH TLV-TWAs for the individual substances and mixtures in the paste inks department. The lack of regulation of these types of workplace exposures in South Africa is discussed, and recommendations are made for control measures to limit solvent emissions.
