Abstract

We appreciate the insightful comments from Drs Braillon and Taibei concerning our recently published study.1Khan A. et al.Clin Gastroenterol Hepatol. 2015; Google Scholar We agree that alcohol use disorders in patients with chronic liver disease remain a significant problem, and we believe that psychosocial therapy that is integrated with medical care may be efficacious in inducing and maintaining long-term abstinence. Furthermore, as highlighted by Drs Braillon and Taibei, the duration and intensity of psychosocial therapy are important. We found that brief motivational interviewing was not effective in inducing alcohol abstinence in patients with alcohol-related chronic liver disease. We also agree that the effective management of the social, health, and economic problems caused by alcohol use disorders requires a much broader collaborative and multidisciplinary approach that includes clinicians, healthcare policy makers, economists, and the government.2Stubbs M.A. et al.Clin Med. 2011; 11: 189-193Google Scholar Treatment of Alcohol Use Disorders: Benchmarking Houston, Texas, and Philadelphia, PennsylvaniaClinical Gastroenterology and HepatologyVol. 14Issue 3PreviewKhan et al,1 from Houston, Texas, are to be commended for their systematic analysis of interventions to maintain alcohol abstinence, which confirmed that integrated therapy with cognitive behavioral therapy and medical care are effective. This should receive major media coverage. Full-Text PDF
