Abstract

D ear S ir, We appreciate Dr Gasbarrini’s interest in the SHEEP study. The suggestions for further exploration of the gender differences in myocardial infarction risk are intriguing but would deserve a separate study to be properly and efficiently evaluated. SHEEP is a population-based study of risk factors for first episode of myocardial infarction with focus on environmental exposures. However, blood samples from 2900 subjects (cases and referents) are kept frozen for future analyses of novel risk markers including inflammatory variables and selected genetic polymorphisms. Gender differences will be observed in these analyses. Received 5 October 1999; accepted 6 October 1999.
