Abstract

Micturition is a process of detrusor contraction preceded by urethral sphincter relaxation. During the course of micturition, a volitional urethral sphincter contraction cannot only stop the urinary flow, but also inhibit detrusor contractility. Learned dysfunctional voiding might result from repeated urethral sphincter contractions and cause functional bladder outlet obstruction or even, in the late stage, result in low detrusor contractility and lazy bladder syndrome. The role of the urethral sphincter in micturition is more than just an on-off switch.
