Abstract

Gutmann–Popov donor numbers, rather than classical Gutmann donor numbers, is probably a more appropriate description of the parameters used in the correlation between the 23Na NMR shift and the donor number of the solvent for a variety of ionic liquids (ILs). Overall, the measurement of 23Na NMR chemical shifts proves to be a useful method to characterize the nucleophilicity of ILs, which mostly originates from the anionic part of the ILs.
