We thank Professor Pye for his detailed comments on the Ribble Estuary and the editor for allowing us to respond to the comments on our paper, thereby affording the opportu nity for us to provide additional explanatory background, as well as details of further work that has been completed, pub lished, or both in the time between the submission of our manuscript and its publication. In what follows, we use the following abbreviations: KR, Karunarathna and Reeve (2008); VPN, Van der Wal, Pye, and Neal (2002); P, Pye (2008).
