Abstract

In an alternative approach to interpreting the developmental traits we described for the fossil insular bovid Myotragus (1), Meiri and Raia (2) aim to explain the slow and cyclical growth, the small offspring and adult size, and the many old individuals as a result of a shift toward a fast life-history and an accelerated reproduction to enhance fitness, which they feel is consistent with a scenario of reduced extrinsic mortality.
