The percentage of Group III/IV afferents that is opioid receptor sensitive is unknown. Therefore a considerable amount of afferent feedback likely remained intact during our experiments and we cannot quantify the “relative” contribution of muscle afferents to effort perception. Accordingly, the only interpretation of our findings that is useful is that blocking a portion of these afferents had a significant influence on the subjects' perception of the effort during exercise.
