Abstract

I concur with Mariam Darce Frenier's comment regarding Phyllis Schlafly recognizing the moral superiority of women, particularly in regards to control over sexuality. Social conservatives do believe, as I discuss in my book, that men require both moral and legal authority to restrain their passionate, lustful natures.' However, while women may be seen as morally superior, social conservative belief rests on a firm commitment to the superior authority of men in the home. Men are claimed to be the spiritual leaders in the household. Further, social conservative women argue that no matter what changes occur in the conventions of sex roles (e.g., doing laundry, cooking meals), men must retain their role as the decision makers in the family.
