Abstract

We thank Drs Dhasmana and Davidson for their comments concerning our work on tuberculous meningitis (TBM) in Vietnam. We can reassure them that the results from anti-microbial susceptibility tests were not available whilst the patients were still alive. Ten patients with multi-drug resistant (MDR) TBM died on days 1, 4, 7, 10, 12, 13, 15, 25 and 62 of treatment; the patient with rifampicin mono-resistance died on day 26. The delay caused by conventional phenotypic testing of isolates is clearly life-threatening.
