Abstract
<i>To the Editor</i>.—We wish to reply to the comments by Drs. Anson, Wolff, and Ruedi to our recent "Letter to the Editor" (<i>Arch Otolaryng</i><b>83:</b>504, 1966) on the cause of otosclerosis. <i>To Dorothy Wolff, PhD.</i>—All our illustrations are from adults with normal hearing and not from patients with otosclerosis. We have not stated anything about otosclerosis in the illustrations. We do not think that we can sustain that bone cells secrete a lipid, contrary to the classical knowledge that fat cellular degeneration is a necrobiotic and necrotic process. We have not stated that the otosclerosis process arises primarily in the globuli interossei. The term "amphophil appetence" ("readily stainable alike with acid and basic dyes," Gould's<i>Medical Dictionary</i>, ed 5) is, in our opinion, a characteristic of the endochondral layer; and "eosinophil appetence" ("histological elements with a peculiar affinity for eosin stain or for acid stains in general,"
