Abstract

By giving preference to “soft” experimental evidence, left uncriticized, CE [1] have made it appear that Widmanstatten ferrite, upper and lower bainite form by various varieties of shear [2,4] even though the weight of “hard” experimental evidence (which they ignore, discard or harshly criticize) now available indicates that each of these transformation products forms by purely diffusional nucleation and growth mechanisms, with growth probably occuring predominantly in ledgewise fashion.
