Abstract

The average generation time of large and small splenic lymphocytes in the 3 week old male rat is about 12 h. DNA synthesis occupies 8 h, G2 + mitosis 1 h and G1 about 3 h. The data indicate that each of these populations replicates separately. Some cells complete the division cycle and remain in situ. Others complete DNA synthesis and remain in situ, arrested in G2 for unknown intervals. A third group synthesizes DNA and leaves the spleen prior to completion of mitosis, probably in G2.
