Abstract
Objective To investigate the therapeutic effect of 5-aminolaevulinic acid (5-ALA)-mediated photodynamie therapy (PDT) on C6 glioma in Wistar rats. Methods Thirty-two rats with sub-cutaneous xenograft of C6 glioma were divided into 4 groups : PDT group, repetitive PDT group, laser irradi-ation group and control group. The inhibitory effect on the glioma grafts in all groups was evaluated by growth curves upon tumor' s sizes. Results There was marked inhibitory effect in the glioma grafts in the repetitive PDT group ( P < 0.05 ) and some inhibitory effect was also seen in the PDT group as compared to the laser irradiation group and control group ( P < 0.05 ). Histological examination by hematoxylin and eosin stainning demonstrated that cellular necrosis in the glioma grafts was significantly increased in the PDT and repetitive PDT groups as compared to the laser irradiation group and control group ( P < 0.05 ). Conclusion The therapeutics of 5-ALA mediated repetitive PDT might have more pronounced effect on glioma growth suppression than treatments with single PDT. Key words: Glioma; Photodynamic therapy; 5-aminolaevulinic acid
