Abstract

This study aims to throw light on the objectives and effects of repetition in ayat al-nūr (Q. 24:35) and ayat al-ẓulumāt (Q. 24:40), two verses in which the words nūr and ẓulumāt represent a binary opposition that are employed to create a literary effect. The rhetorical technique of repetition (uslūb al-takrīr) is a significant stylistic feature of the Qur'an, and so the discussion of these two verses in this article will be based in this technique. The analysis will illustrate the role of repetition in clarifying meaning, focusing particularly on the way it intensifies the concept of accumulation (al-tarākum), multiplication (al-muḍāʿafa) and the use of synonyms (al-tarāduf) in Sūrat al-Nūr in general, as well as these two verses in particular.
