Abstract

Penetrating injuries of the common carotid artery are rare, but with a high morbidity and mortality. There has been a significant increase in this type of injury in the last 10 years in our country, associated with organised crime. They are a challenge for a general surgeon in hospitals without cardiovascular surgeons available. It is important to know the optimal management of this type of injury, as well as the timely diagnosis of those that require urgent surgical treatment, as well as those that can be managed using conservative or endovascular treatments helped by complementary studies. The case is presented of an isolated injury of the right common carotid artery by a firearm projectile. The patient was treated by the General Surgery department. A cervical vascular examination and resection of the affected segment with end-to-end anastomosis was performed in a third level hospital in Northeast Mexico.
