Abstract

SUMMARY Objective: To report our first cases of laparoscopic repair of paravaginal defect and to evaluate efficacy and short-term complication. Methods: We carried out a prospective observational study of 12 patients who underwent laparoscopic repair of paravaginal defect by lateral cystocele symptomatic and laparoscopic Burch procedure for genuine stress urinary incontinence, performed between January 2005 and May 2006. All the regular epidemiologic parameters were evaluated and sucess rate for cumulative survival analysis and Kaplan Meier. Results: The mean age of the patients was 45.1 ± 6.3 years, mean operative time 71.3 ± 13.2 minutes and the mean length of the hospital stay 1.2 ± 0.4 days. We didn’t have perioperative complications and post surgery we had one case of urinary retention, one case urinary tract infection and one case urinary incontinence postoperative. The short term success was in 80% (cumulative survival) by two patients with asymptomatic intravaginal cystocele. Conclusions: According to our results the laparoscopic repair of paravaginal defect is feasible, safe and with good results in short-term. Long-term assessment is required to confirm the results of this procedure.
