Abstract

Anterior glenohumeral dislocation is the most common joint dislocation. Injury to the axillary artery due to shoulder dislocation without bone fracture is rare. There are different mechanisms of injury and different types of arterial lesions. Open surgery is the classical treatment of such lesions, consisting of direct suture at the site of the rupture, or arterial reconstruction with a patch or bypass. An alternative approach is treatment with minimally invasive endovascular techniques. We present the case of a 70-year-old woman with partial right axillary artery rupture following anterior glenohumeral dislocation which was treated with a covered stent implant. We review all the cases from English language literature of arterial trauma following shoulder dislocation treated with endovascular techniques.
