Abstract

Hernias may form after the harvesting of a deep circumflex iliac artery (DCIA) free flap because of the defect in the internal oblique muscle, denervation of the muscles of the abdominal wall, and discontinuity of the iliac crest. It occurs in 5–10% of patients.1,2 To reduce the likelihood of herniation, the donor site is often repaired with a synthetic mesh, but this is difficult to attach to the iliac crest. It can be attached to the bone with titanium plates, Mitek anchors (Mitek Surgical Products),3 or prefabricated prostheses.
