Abstract

Rising damp is a common problem in historic masonry buildings worldwide. This paper describes a study of two methods currently in use for repairing damp-proof layers in such buildings in Shanghai, China: mechanical physical methods and chemical injection methods. It provides two case studies to demonstrate the use of each method in practice. The aim of the paper is to aid in the selection of suitable and reliable protection and repair technologies of damp-proof layers, to standardise construction technology and to ensure the continued and sustainable use of historic buildings.
