Beyond a short excerpt from Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club or some exposure on the junior high school level to Laurence Yep's works (such as Dragonwings), one will be hard pressed to find the works of Asian American authors on the reading lists of most high schools. As English teachers, we need to expand our vision of what the canon should be, recognizing that the canon needs to make room for authors beyond that of the usual Caucasian and African American selections.
