Abstract
A real-space renormalisation group transformation is applied to a quantum two-dimensional problem, that of the Ising model in a transverse field on a square lattice. This enables the authors to estimate some properties of the ordinary Ising model on the three-dimensional simple cubic lattice. A straightforward method and a variational improvement thereof are contrasted in this work. Neither turns out to be capable of producing satisfactory critical exponents.
