Abstract

It is not clear how far the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system maintains blood pressure in normotensive subjects on a “normal” sodium intake (1) (see also Niarchos and Pickering, p 567). There is, therefore, controversy over how important this system is in the maintenance of blood pressure in essential hypertension (2). All drugs that inhibit or block the renin-angiotensin system have other actions, making it difficult to draw conclusions from the use of only one of these agents. In this study, we have compared the effect on blood pressure in normotensive and hypertensive subjects of two inhibitors of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, saralasin and captopril.
