Abstract

The main objective of this research study is to examine (i) critical issues relating to renewing human assets for improving port performance, (ii) strategies to be taken for imparting training which would result in improving performance for Indian ports, and (iii) the existing relationship between port efficiency and renewing human assets through training in Indian Ports. A statistical analysis through a model comprising trainee density and average turnround of ships on port accounts in days has been carried out for data over three years 1999–00, 2000–01 and 2001–02. The results obtained have been very interesting. Three distinct relationships have emerged between renewal of human assets and port efficiency for three segments of observations. The author has then identified the issues and suggests the framework of policy and a plan for renewal of human assets for improving performance in Indian ports.
