Abstract

Transformation of the III/I in the second half of the 1980s followed the Hungarian social changes. Shaping of a new intelligence service started at the end of 1988. After the regime change a new, inventive service, adjusted to the democratic environment, was set up. Tasks, directions followed the new foreign political and economic orientation, structural and personnel changes of large volume occurred. The new civilian intelligence service provided support to the government, gained confidence from the political leadership, became an active member of the new Hungarian state institution system and the international intelligence community.
