Abstract
Pregnant women with renal calculi present several special problems. They have an increased incidence of urinary tract infections,1,2 and stone passage can cause premature labor.3 They present both diagnostic and management problems; a stone obstructing the ureter may be difficult to diagnose because of anatomic changes that occur in the collecting system. Management of stones is more complicated than in the non-gravid state because most of the therapeutic interventions commonly employed in stone disease can potentially adversely affect the developing fetus. This chapter reviews the incidence, etiology, diagnosis, natural history, and management of kidney stones during pregnancy.
