Abstract

Objective: Perioperative renal dysfunction is a common complication in cardiac surgery patients and may be due to free radical formation induced by cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and cardioplegic arrest. Because anti-oxidants have been shown to attenuate free radical-induced renal dysfunction in medical patients, we hypothesized that the anti-oxidant N-acetylcysteine (NAC) protects renal function in patients subjected to cardiac surgery on CPB.
