Abstract

Three cases of papillary necrosis in newborn infants are reported. In each instance the necrosis was associated with severe icterus with elevated concentrations of indirect‐reacting bilirubin. Common clinical symptoms of these cases were, in addition to icterus, oliguria, anuria, and/ or hematuria. Rapid elevation of serum N.P.N, was observed.Thirty‐three reported cases of this rare condition have been reviewed, including twenty‐four in the newborn.Renal papillary necrosis may be caused by altered blood flow in the renal medulla. Deposition of high concentrations of bilirubin in the tubular epithelium of the renal medulla may act as a trigger of the lesion. ACTA PATH. JAP. 19: 419˜431, 1969.
