Abstract
The second edition of this book is greatly changed and improved. Almost half of the chapters are entirely new or considerably rewritten. The first two parts of the book, the "Kidney in Health" and the "Kidney in Disease," now present an excellent review of the current status of nephrology. The third section, on the relation of the kidney to generalized diseases, still seems a hodgepodge. The text suffers from repetition of material, a situation which is difficult to manage with multiple authorship. The new chapter on the urinary concentrating mechanism is excellent. "Radiology of the Kidney" has been redone; it remains a valuable account of the expanding helpfulness of this discipline. Such a chapter is seldom found in textbooks of medicine. There is added emphasis on pyelonephritis; new discussions on renal dialysis and transplantation attest to the effort to keep the book attuned to recent progress in the field.
